Founded in England in 1956, there are over 1100 Abbeyfield Houses worldwide and houses in Canada since the mid 1980s. The Vernon house welcomed its first tenant in 1999. Each Abbeyfield house is operated by its own society with charitable status and is managed by a volunteer board of directors. <br><br>Abbeyfield House in Vernon is close to downtown, with easy access to the main shopping area and seniors' centre and is on a transit route. We welcome residents from the greater Vernon area, including Lumby, Coldstream and Cherryville, as well as others from out of town who wish to be closer to family.<br><br>The house has two storeys with 6 rooms upstairs and 5 on the ground floor. Ten rooms have an en suite toilet and sink; the eleventh room also has a shower. Residents furnish their own room. The house is located on a treed lot with a small creek. Enjoying coffee on the patio and barbecues make summers fun here. Residents are free to come and go as they please and maintain their independent lifestyles. Abbeyfield provides a home for those in relatively good health who are able to keep their independence but need a little support with meals and housekeeping. The intimate and friendly size of Abbeyfield house enables residents to enjoy socializing with others, join in with activities if they wish, while living in a supportive and family-like setting.
